The United Kingdom is preparing to launch its new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system later this year. This novel system aims to strengthen border security by linking travellers’ passports digitally.
However, as we draw closer to its implementation, concerns are beginning to emerge. There are fears that it might complicate travel plans or even inflate the cost of journeys. Some experts even predict that it might lead to a decrease in the number of people choosing to fly.
The ETA bears similarities to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) in the United States. This is a system that checks the eligibility of visitors travelling under the country’s Visa Waiver Program through an e-passport. But bear in mind, securing an ESTA or ETA just gives you the right to travel to a country’s port of entry. It doesn’t guarantee you’ll be granted entry to the country.
According to a report from The Independent, the UK government plans to make ETAs a requirement by the end of 2024 for all travellers who are visiting for short stays without needing a visa. Starting November 15th this year, people travelling from Qatar will be the first to require an ETA. Following this, the system will be gradually expanded to include travellers from other Gulf region states and then, to the rest of the world.
To get an ETA, you’ll need to apply online and provide some details for security checks. An approval decision is expected to be given within a few days. Before boarding a flight to the UK, your airline will confirm your ETA. Upon arrival, the UK Border Force will also check the ETA. Remember, though, just like an ESTA, having an ETA does not guarantee you’ll be allowed into the UK.
Though there are some concerns about how the ETA system might affect UK airlines and tourism, particularly to Northern Ireland, the UK government remains steadfast. They believe that the ETA will strengthen border security and better protect the country. So, if you’re planning a trip to the UK, make sure you stay updated about the ETA.
